Renovation project - birthday celebrations!
We are having a birthday lunch
today with some friends; we will be going to a little restaurant at the edge of
town called Auberge De Menez Bras
We have not been before and are quite looking
forward to it. I even make the effort of dressing up!
The restaurant is one of those
where the workers and lorry drivers eat and they have a set menu for less than
12 euro’s.
We were advised to eat in these types of restaurants but to look for
one where there are lots of work vehicles outside, people were not wrong! The place
is heaving, it is so busy. We have the set menu, which is a salad buffet
starter, I really do not want anything else, I have died and gone to heaven,
the selection of salad is unbelievable and includes fresh meats and king
prawns, though a big tip is, if you see the desert you like grab it now as it
may not be there later.
I am stuffed after the salad (and
no I am not living on lettuce leaves!) I have beef goulash and John opts for
steak and chips, both are fantastic the beef melts in your mouth and the steak
is cooked to perfection.
The big slice of cream cake is
fantastic, yes strawberry’s and fruit were an option but hey its cream cake!
And on top of this the wine is
included! Yes you get a carafe and fill it as often as you like, we do not go
over board and have a small carafe each.
We go back to the house after
lunch and cannot move, John has a lie down for a couple of hours and I surprise
myself by actually making it out for a bike ride, albeit a very small one.
So in summary, if you can find a
workers restaurant with a set menu, go for it but do not plan on doing anything
else for the rest of the day.
These are great places to eat cheaply but be aware that some discourage "non-workers", one near us puts the "non-workers" in a back room out of the way. However, our local one seems to encourage everyone and there are often people in business suits eating there.
ReplyDeleteHi
Deletethis one had 2 separate rooms, but luckily both were nice, if anything the one for non workers was much nicer, it appeared to be far more restaurantee.
We will definitely be trying some more but only when we plan a day off as they only seem to open at lunchtime and there is no way you can work after one of these lunches!
They are usually only open between 12 & 2:00 but the French seems to work during the afternoon ;-)
ReplyDeleteI have a new found respect for French work men, or anybody who can work after one of these lunches ha ha ha
DeleteWe have been to the Menez Bras loads of times and love it there, another place if you haven't tried it is on the D769 past port de Carhaix called the Montagne noir If anything it is better and that takes some doing, pretty much the same price 12.50 euros but does include coffee and a better selection of sweets that are bought round to the table.
ReplyDeleteyou've just sold it on the sweets :)
