Renovation project - redesigning an old Kitchen (again!)

Renovation project - redesigning an old Kitchen (again!)

Today is spent taking down the last bit of the wall in the kitchen so that we can see just how high the rise on the floor is, and putting in the old oak post.

It is a lot higher than we had expected.

This is really not good; we try to decide how high the cupboards and the work top need to be. If they are the correct height in the kitchen, they are too low on the hallway. This is not helped by the fact that I never really wanted cupboards over here anyway.

the post is not just for cosmetic purposes, John wants to make sure that the corner of the concrete raft is supported, (you may remember that the floor of the bathroom is concrete) the post is not really necessary, but John wants to make sure that everything is as safe and secure as possible, plus he loves oak (I actually think he used the excuse of security just as a ruse to get me to agree to having the oak post installed).

I had no idea just how heavy the post would be and we have great fun putting it in place (it is fully treated with wood preserver and protection, this is essential for any old wood in the house)

In the end John says he will build the frame so that we can see what it will look like.

This changes everything, it is so much easier to see things once you have an outline and I really like the look of the frame that has been built, so much so that I want to keep it as a handrail.

This means redesigning the kitchen all over again! (I’m really glad we hadn’t started building the units!) and it serves John right for insisting on the oak post I love it and want to make sure it can be seen.
The kitchen is now going to have the units and worktops along the wall where the door to the living room was and along the wall where the cooker and sink unit are going to be.

We have 2 trouble spots, one is making sure that the consumer unit is hidden by a cupboard and the water heart is covered by a unit.

This way will keep the open feel of the kitchen; I really like not having the wall there.
